Angel: "Where did David go?"
Gabriel: "He's out in California some where, so is Kelly..."
Angel: (I jump in before he finishes his sentence) "McLauchlin?…”
(Gabe pauses for a second and I hear him wondering, "How did she know that?” But of course I know that, Gabe and I have been friends for 20 years now.)
Angel: "Kelly is in California with David??? What happened to Texas, last I knew David was here in Austin playing Country, then he just sort of disappeared..."
Gabriel: "Yeah, Kelly is playing with David, the name of the band is "I Am Morbid."
Angel: "Oh, a play on "Morbid Angel."
Gabriel: "David was in Morbid Angel at the beginning..."
Angel: "I know. I've known about them for years. As soon as Bax and I got together in 2001 the first band he kept talking about was "Morbid Angel." I've always liked Kelly, which bands were you in together?"
Gabe tells me then starts talking about the time I went with him to Tampa in 2006 or 2007. He mentions all the famous death metal musicians that were there one particular night that he is reminding me of. I think he must have been playing with his band "Equinox" that night. I'm going to have to get him to repeat those names for me so I can write them down.
Gabriel: "It was probably too early for you to realize just who you were seeing playing that night. But they were the founders of a lot of the original old-school death metal bands. You were taking videos..."
Angel: "I remember, and yes, I didn't know who anyone was yet. I just realized you were the center of it all, though, or at least it seemed like it. Were we at the "Crowbar?"
One of my "Texas Tales from a Lone Star" tales will be when Gabriel and I were talking to David Vincent at Cowboy Harley Davidson during a ROT Rally festival during SXSW and Gabe introduced me. Actually, I had already met David, because of Gabe, over Facebook, and we had been talking. I had taken Gabe to see my friend Bull perform and the guitar player (Danny B. Harvey of The Head Cat) who had been playing with David during his "Death Metal icon meets Texas Outlaw Country" days in Austin was playing with Bull. David had been there and he and Gabe had recognized each other immediately and started chatting up a storm. "Angel! Buy David a drink!" Gabriel had instructed me and I had.
P.S. This is what David said when I told him about my short-story: “I’m not in California. Wouldn’t live there if you paid me.”
I am reminded, when I see my Christian friends “Liking” my stories like this one, of the most beautiful lyrics my former rock/metal boyfriend, Bax, ever wrote about me:
“She walks on clouds of painted nighttime
She speaks in tongues and I hear my name
She lives in Heaven and spits golden arrows
She sees right through me and she feels my pain, my pain, my pain, my PAIN!!!”

This is one of the short-stories that will be in my upcoming new book, "The Harvest of Chapelgate" which covers my writing from 2009 to 2022.
